Gettin’ Your Groove Back: Renewing Rituals

This retreat is designed to help you establish renewing rituals, principally in the areas of rest (sleep and sabbath), activity (e.g., exercise) and nourishment (e.g. diet).

Modern life is unparalleled in its ability to destabilize humans. In the western culture we’re currently locked into the rhythms of a deeply entrenched, highly schizophrenic life that consistently pushes us toward sleep deprivation, a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating, and a blurring of lines between rest and work. Living wisely in these areas is a difficult enterprise, not too unlike that of a recovering alcoholic attempting to stay sober in a bar. Nevertheless, it is possible.

Labor, rest, and nourishment form a sub-structure for physical life. You might think of them as the “Holy Triad” for human physical life. Unfortunately, the church has, in gnostic-like ways, tended to minimalize the role of the body proper in cultivating an adequate spirituality. If we believe that we have no spiritual life apart from our bodies, then issues of rest, work, diet and ritual are crucial for ministry. Join us as together we try to discern how to establish healthy rituals that carry us through ministry.

Some special features of this particular retreat are:
• exceptionally healthy meals
• a daily period for walks / exercise
• a wind-down, lights-out time
• generous amounts of sleep + siesta
• analysis of your current routines
• help in constructing sensible goals in the areas of rest, activity, nourishment and sabbath
• a follow-up plan

Our guided retreats require a minimum of six people in order to be offered. If your group would like to schedule one, let us know which of the two you’d like to have and what dates you’re looking at. We’ll look at our schedule to see if we can accommodate your request. We’re also open to tailoring a retreat according to your needs. If we can serve you in this way, let’s talk.
